Starting Strong: How Elementary Habits Shape Your Child’s Future
Did you know that there are 7 building blocks that can greatly influence and predict a student's success in high school and life , spanning academic, social-emotional, and family dimensions? These key predictors of future success include:
-
Early Literacy and Math Skills: Strong foundational skills in reading and math in elementary school are among the most significant predictors of later academic success. Students who read at grade level by third grade, for example, are much more likely to succeed in high school.
-
Attendance: Chronic absenteeism in elementary school is a strong predictor of academic struggles later. Consistent attendance is linked to better academic performance, engagement, and graduation rates.
-
Behavior and Social Skills: Positive social behaviors, emotional regulation, and classroom behavior are important. Students who can manage their emotions, get along with peers, and follow classroom rules tend to perform better academically in later years.
-
Parental Involvement: Active parental involvement in a child’s education during elementary years is linked to greater academic success and higher levels of engagement in high school. This includes involvement in school activities, helping with homework, and fostering a positive attitude toward education.
-
Self-Regulation and Executive Functioning: Skills like time management, organization, focus, and the ability to follow multi-step directions are strong indicators of how well a student will adapt to the more demanding environment of high school.
-
Growth Mindset and Motivation: Students who develop a growth mindset—believing that abilities can be developed through effort—tend to persevere through challenges, which correlates with better academic outcomes in the long run.
-
Peer Relationships: Positive peer relationships and the ability to form friendships can contribute to a student's emotional well-being, which influences academic performance.

These early indicators help shape a student’s readiness for the challenges of high school, guiding educators and parents in providing timely support. Over the next few weeks, you should be hearing from your child’s teacher about scheduling a time to meet with you to discuss your child’s progress towards mastering grade level expectations. This is a great time to sit down with your child’s teacher to talk about what areas your child is doing well in and what are areas for improvement along with creating a game plan to help your child be more successful. It is our goal to partner with our families to support the social, emotional and academic growth of all of our students.
